Question

Assertion: A solution contains 0.1 M each of Pb2+,Zn2+,Ni2+ ions. If H2S is passed into this solution at 25oC
Pb2+,Ni2+,Zn2+ will get precipitated simultaneously.
Reason: Pb2+ and Zn2+ will get precipited if the solution contains 0.1 M HCl.
[K1H2S=107,K2H2S=1014,KspPbS=3×1029KspNiS=3×1019.KspZnS=1025]

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
Here 0.1 M H2S is passed into the solution directly. Selectively precipitation of Pb2+,Zn2+andNi2+ is not possible, as the ionic product of their respective sulphides is more than their Ksp values and S2 ion is n()t added slowly or dropwise.
If H2S is passed into the solution containing only H2O, then
[S2]K2 of H2S=1014M
But in 0.1 M HCl solution.
K1×K2=[H]2[S2]H2S
107×1014=(0.1)[S2]0.1[S2]=1020M
Qsp of PbS and ZnS (0.1×1020)>Ksp of PbS and ZnS (Hence both precipitate) Qsp of NiS(1021)<Ksp of NiS (Hence do not precipitate).
