Solution
The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion. Chara, a fresh water green algae is found submerged in fresh water ponds, lakes, tanks and slow running water. Generally, it is found in hard fresh water rich in organic matter, calcium and deficient in oxygen. These plants have encrustation of calcium carbonate and hence are known as stoneworts. They resemble higher plants and their structure includes root like rhizoids, the whorl of branches at regular intervals and an erect cylindrical axis surrounded by a sheath of small cells. In sexual reproduction, each female sex organ called oogonium contains one large immobile egg and each male sex organ called antheridium produces one small biflagellate sperm. The reproductive structures being surrounded by an envelope of sterile cells resemble higher plants, Bryophytes.
