The cells of corpus luteum are called luteal cells. The cytoplasm of luteal cells have yellow granules called luteal cells. The cytoplasm of luteal cells have yellow granules called lutein which secrete the hormone progesterone to maintain pregnancy if fertilization takes place. In the absence of fertilization corpus luteum degenerates and forms corpus albicans.
