The rhizome of ginger plant is a horizontal and prostrate growing underground stem with reduced scale-like leaves. Further, this shows that shoot growth is not affected by gravity. However, the growth of prostrate ginger rhizome is not due to the reason stated. Rhizomes are root stalks that develop from axillary buds. Hence, diageotropic, i.e., they grow perpendicular to the force of gravity. The rhizomes also allow new shoots to grow upwards leading to vegetative propagation of plants.
