Solution

The correct option is B Both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion
Air pollution is any undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air. This is caused due to the addition of certain gaseous or particulate substances into air, known as air pollutants.

Air pollution can have several adverse effects on the lives of living organisms and can degrade the environment. Some of the impacts of air pollution are as follows :
  • Health problems such as breathing problems, headache, nausea, respiratory infections, lung cancers, etc.
  • Formation of smog (fog intensified by smoke) which not only obstructs visibility but can also cause itchiness and burning in the eyes, respiratory problems, etc.
  • Global warming (an increase in average temperature of the Earth)
  • Acid rain which destroys plants and aquatic life, corrodes monuments, etc.
Thus to control, prevent and abate the occurrence of air pollution, the Government of India enacted the Air (Prevention and Control) act in 1981. Under air act, government has adopted various measures such as :
  • Promoting and encouraging the use of alternatives of fossil fuels for energy production. For example, burning of coal in thermal power plants is a major contributor of air pollution. Hence using water or wind energy to produce electricity is a safer alternative which is being encouraged and explored by the government.
  • Bharat stage emission standards are limits laid down by the Government of India in order to regulate the output of air pollutants from motor vehicles.
  • Government has also applied stringent rules on the use of unleaded petrol and automobile fuels having low sulphur and aromatic hydrocarbon content.
  • Promoting the use of public transport to reduce the emission from individual vehicles.
Thus, both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
