Histamine is a compound which is released by basophils of blood and mast cells of connective tissue during injury. Chemicals from microbes and histamines together cause dilation of capillaries surrounding the injury and increase the permeability of the capillary wall. As a result, more blood flows to that area, making it red and warm, and fluid leaks out into the tissue spaces, causing its swelling.
Histamine causes allergic effects but it is not due to its vasodilatory action.
