In angiosperms, during the process of megasporogenesis, the diploid megaspore divides by meiosis to form four haploid megaspores. Out of these, three normally degenerate and only one megaspore remains.

This functional megaspore will undergo repeated mitosis to give rise to an 8 celled 8 nucleated embryosac. This is the female gametophyte in angiosperms as it contains the single egg cell.
