Intercalary meristems are present in stems at the base of nodes and leaf blades. Cells of such meristems can divide and form new cells. If the tip of the plant is removed then the intercalary meristem form new cells and increases plant growth. Intercalary meristem divides and provides an increase in the length of the internode. When root or shoot grows in length some apical meristem leaves some meristematic cells behind at the node. Such meristems are called as intercalary meristems. They possess the same capacity as apical meristems. Therefore, both assertion and reason are correct.
