Both assertion and reason are incorrect.
During iodination, HI is formed which is strong reducing agent and reduces alkyl iodides back to alkanes. Hence, iodination is carried out in presence of oxidising agents like HIO3, conc. HNO3 HIO4 etc.
Among the halogens, iodine is least reactive towards halogenation and the reaction of iodine with alkanes is endothermic. Hence, iodination of alkanes cannot take place explosively.
