It is composed of phospholipid bilayer structure with embedded proteins and gives the mosaic-like appearance. The outer membrane leaflet contains the zwitterionic phospholipids like sphingomyelin and phosphatidylcholine, while the inner membrane leaflet contains phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl serine and even present phosphatidylinositol.
