Heterospory refers to the productions of two different types of spores ( both in size and sex) by the sporophytic land plant. While the majority of pteridophytes are homosporous, Selaginella is the first to show heterospory. The reduction division of meiosis takes place both during megaspore and microspore formation. In microsporangium, the reduction division takes place in each spore mother cell followed by simple division (Mitosis) resulting in four microspores from each mother cell. In the case of megasporangium, out of the four megaspores produced only one becomes functional.
