Question

Assertion :The atoms or ions possessing unpaired electrons are paramagnetic in nature whereas those possessing electron pairs are diamagnetic in nature. Reason: In diamagnetic substances, the spins of the two electrons cancel out and thus the diamagnetic substances doesnot show any magnetic behaviour . However in paramagnetic substances, the spin of the electron counts and the resultant magnetic moment is not zero.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
An electron is designated with a spin as +1/2 or 1/2. In diamagnetic substances, the spins of the two electrons cancel out and thus the diamagnetic substances doesnot show any magnetic behaviour . However in paramagnetic substances, the spin of the electron counts and the resultant magnetic moment is not zero.
