Question

Assertion :The downward movement of minerals through the soil is influenced by the quantity and pH of water. Reason: Water makes mineral ions available to roots. The lower the pH, the greater the leaching power of water.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.
In the soil, the minerals (which exist as positively charged ions) are held up adsorbed to clay particles. The clay particles are negatively charged and so positively charged minerals are adsorbed on them. Plants absorb minerals from the soil solution. The soil solution gets minerals from clay particles.
When more water is available either due to excess rains, floods or over irrigation the excess water washes away the mineral ions, called as leaching.
The leaching is more when pH of water is low because low pH means the excess of protons. The protons are positively charged and they can easily replace positively charged mineral ions adsorbed to clay particles.
