If the fourth group cations, Zn salts are colorless, manganese salts are faint pink or colorless and nickel and cobalt salts may be brightly colored, often blue-green.
The precipitate is washed in water & is reacted with dilute HCl this precipitates Ni salts. Now, the resultant liquid is filtered and reacted with an excess of NaOH, this precipitate Mn salts H2S is then passed through the supernatant liquid. If a white precipitate forms, Zn is present. Thus, the fourth group cations when precipitation forms different colors.
Also, all the metal ions present in different group, show different colors in the respectuie group, but they can even show same colors.
