Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
The period of cosx & cosax are 2π and 2π|a| respectively

Period of cosx+cosax=L.C.M of (2π1,2π|a|)

=L.C.M of (2π,2π)H.C.F of (1,|a|)

=2πλ (where λ is H.C.F of 1,|a|)

Since
λ is H.C.F of 1 & |a| so
1λ & |a|λ should be an integer.

Say 1λ=m & |a|λ=n then we have

|a|=nm where n,mI & H.C.F (m,n)=1

a=a rational number.
