When embryo sac develops from a single functional megaspore, it is called monosporic development. It is common in most angiosperms. In this, only one megaspore situated towards the chalazal end remains functional and the rest three degenerates and finally disappear.

The functional megaspore then goes through three successive equational/mitotic divisions and make an eight-nucleate embryo sac.
