Solution

The correct option is A Both assertion and the reason are true and the reason is a correct explanation of the assertion
The human body consists of many different tissues which unite to form organs, which in turn form organ systems. All the systems are controlled and coordinated in a synchronized way. Defect or mutation in any part or gene which is an integrated part of a system or a metabolic cycle leads to manifestation in many ways in which describing which phenotypic trait best characterizes the disorder is impossible. The phenomenon where the expression of a single gene has multiple phenotypic effects is called pleiotropy. The examples of pleiotropic disorders are Phenylketonuria, Sickle cell anaemia, Kartagener’s syndrome, and Cystic fibrosis.

For example, cystic fibrosis affects the cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices. It causes these fluids to become thick and sticky. They then plug up tubes, ducts and passageways. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by mutations in a gene called the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. The CFTR gene provides instructions for the CFTR protein. The CFTR protein is located in every organ of the body that makes mucus, including the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, as well as sweat glands. The CFTR protein has also been found in other cells in the body, such as cells of the heart and the immune system. The mutations in the CFTR gene cause the CFTR protein to not work properly. Thus, due to a mutation in a single gene an number of organs in the body are affected.

So both assertion and the reason are true and the reason is a correct explanation of the assertion.
