Exchange of genetic material between two non-homologous chromosomes is known as translocation. A translocation heterozygote has translocation in only one of the two sets of chromosomes which hinders the normal pairing of bivalents during meiosis. The subsequent adjacent I and adjacent II segregation of homologous chromosomes produce non-functional gametes while those produced by alternate segregation are functional ones.
