Question

At-273Cvolume of gas is 0. But any gas is a physical quantity having some mass. How can its volume be 0? What happens when temperature is reduces further?

Solution

  • In general, the substances contract on cooling and the intermolecular motion and internal energy reduces.
  • On cooling, the physical properties such as pressure and volume decreases and becomes zero at a temperature which is well before reaching absolute zero (- 273 C).
  • As no gas exists at absolute zero ( - 273 C) , both volume and pressure of the gas become zero.
