Question

At 445C,Kc for the following reaction is 0.020.
2HI(g)H2(g)+I2(g)
A mixture of H2,I2, and HI in a vessel at 445C has the following concentrations: [HI]=2.0M,[H2]=0.50Mand[I2]=0.10M. Which one of the following statements concerning the reaction quotient, Qc, is TRUE for the above system?

A
Qc=Kc the system is at equilibrium.

Solution

The correct option is B Qc is less than Kc; more H2 and I2 will be produced.
For the given reaction,
2HI(g)H2(g)+I2(g)
The reaction guetient Qc can be calculate as:
Qc=H2[I2][HI]2
substituting the given values, we get
QC=[0.50][0.10][2.0]2
Qc=0.054.0
Qc=0.0125
Given Kc=0.020 So, Qc<Kc
For the condition Qc<Kc.
The concentration of the reactants is higher than it would be at equilibrium and the concentration of product is too low. So, in order to reach the equilibrium, the reaction will favor the forward direction meaning that more H2 and I2 will be produced
