Question

Question:
At constant pressure a gas at -33 degree Celsius is heated to 127 degree Celsius. Find the percentage increase in the volume of gas.

Solution

Charles' Law :
This law states that the volume of a given amount of gas held at constant pressure is directly proportional to the Kelvin temperature. As the volume goes up, the temperature also goes up, and vice-versa.
i.e V/T is a constant.
Also, change in volume is proportional to change in temperature.
Given,
T1 = -33℃
= -33+273.15 K
= 240.15 K
T2 = 127℃
= 127 + 273.15 K
= 400.15 K

Hence,
(V2 - V1)/V1 = (T2 - T1)/T1
= (400.15 - 240.15) / 240.15
= 160 / 240.15
= 0.6662

Percentage change in volume,
= [(V2 - V1)/V1] × 100
= 0.6662 × 100
= 66.62%
