Avinash dives into a swimming pool and reaches its bottom. He experiences a pressure of 1.26 atm of that point. What is the gauge pressure at that point?
0.26 atm
Assume a beaker full of liquid of density \(\rho\)
Now total pressure at point P
=P0+ρ gh
This is absolute pressure. As you can see clearly, it is the sum of two terms.
i.e., P0 (i.e., atmospheric pressure) and ρgh→ which in turn is called gauge pressure
Also as atmospheric pressure is always constant (approximately) therefore sometimes gauge pressure is preferred instead of including atmospheric pressure every time. Furthermore this pressure is called gauge pressure because we use a gauge to measure this pressure difference.
P=P0+ρgh
⇒ P−P0 = ρgh
⇒ Guage pressure = 1.26 - 1
= 0.26 atm.
