(ii) Name one lead compound that can be used to oxidize hydrogen chloride to chlorine.

Solution

(i) Oxidation of ammonia with copper oxide results in the formation of copper, nitrogen (gas) and water. The equation is as follows:

2NH3 + 3CuO → 3Cu + N2↑ + 3H2O

(ii) Both lead dioxide and trilead tetroxide can be used to oxidise hydrogen chloride to chlorine. The equation for both the reactions are as follows:

PbO2 + 4HCl → PbCl2 + 2H2O + Cl2
Pb3O4 + 8HCl → 3PbCl2 + 4H2O + Cl2
