Solution

Food chain:

  1. The chain of eating and being eaten is known as food chain.
  2. There are trophic levels in each food chain.
  3. These are the positions of organisms on a food chain.
  4. The lowest level of a trophic level is occupied by producers.
  5. Producers are consumed by primary consumers i.e. herbivores and they occupy the second trophic level.
  6. Primary consumers are then consumed by secondary consumers i.e. carnivores and they occupy the third trophic level.
  7. Secondary consumers are consumed by tertiary consumers i.e. they feed upon carnivores and they occupy the fourth trophic level.
  8. In each trophic level, microorganisms like bacteria and fungi act as decomposers.
  9. They feed on dead and decaying matter and clean the environment.

Final answer: Bacteria and fungi act as decomposers in the food chain in an ecosystem.
