Baker mulliken test is used for the detection of nitro group (NO2).
Reduction of nitrobenzene with zinc in presence of ammonium chloride gives N-phenyl hydroxyl amine.
When N-phenyl hydroxyl amine is heated with Tollen's reagent, formation of metallic silver is observed.
In this reaction, hydroxlamines get oxidised to the corresponding nitroso compound and the Tollen's reagent is itself reduced to metallic silver.
