Question

Both alcohols and carboxylic acids react with sodium. But, only carboxylic acids give effervescence with sodium bicarbonate. Give reason.

Both alcohol & carboxylic acid reacts with NaOH but only carboxylic acid gives effervescence with NaHCO3 because carboxylic acid is more acidic then phenol which react with work base NaHCO3 to give CO2 (effervescence).
