Both alcohols and carboxylic acids react with sodium. But, only carboxylic acids give effervescence with sodium bicarbonate. Give reason.

Both alcohol & carboxylic acid reacts with $N a O H$ but only carboxylic acid gives effervescence with $N a H {C O}_{3}$ because carboxylic acid is more acidic then phenol which react with work base $N a H {C O}_{3}$ to give ${C O}_{2}$ (effervescence).
