Solution

(a) A gene is introduced in brinjal by genetic engineering. This is called BT gene. The expression of this gene results in the production of a protein in brinjal plants which when ingested by the insect proves fatal.

(b) Advantages of genetic modification:
i. Human insulin can be manufactured which can be given to diabetic patients.
ii. Pseudomonas putida also called super bug is used to clean up oil spills in marine waters. This is called bioremediation.
iii. Production of genetically modified crops such as BT cotton and BT brinjal which are insect resistant. Production of genetically modified animals such as cows for increased milk production.

(c) Harmful effects of genetic modification:
i) Genetically modified crops may result in food allergy and also toxicity.
It may also decrease the food nutritive value.
