The phenomenon of causing precipitation of the particles by the addition of an electrolyte is called coagulation or flocculation. The coagulating agent in the form of electrolyte makes the oil and the pollutants present in the water to get aggregate and forms the precipitate and so they get settled off. By easy filtration they can be separated.
