Question

C2O42- can be oxidized to CO2 by MnO4- in acidic as well as in basic medium. What is ratio of moles of MnO4- used per mole of C2O42- in acidic medium(Mn2+) to strong basic medium(MnO42-) ?

Solution

In acidic medium 5 C2O42- + 2 MnO4- + 16 H+ 2 Mn2+ + 10 CO2 + 8 H2OFor 5 moles of oxalate 2 moles of manganate is used. So for 1 mole of oxalate = 25 × 1 = 25 moles of manganate is used. In basic medium3C2O42- + 2 MnO4- + 4 H2O 2 MnO2+ 6 CO2 + 4 OH-For 3 moles of oxalate 2 moles of manganate is used. So for 1 mole of oxalate = 23 × 1 = 23 moles of manganate is used.Thus the ratio of manganate used per mole of oxalate is =2523 = 3:5
