Solution

Although calcium oxide and phosphorus pentoxide are very good drying agents, they cannot be used to dry HCl gas because they react with it.

2P2O5 (s) + 3HCl (aq) → POCl3 (aq) + 3HPO3 (aq)

CaO(s) + 2HCl (aq) → CaCl2 (aq) + H2O (l)
