Question

Calculate the difference in the formulae for

(i) CH3OH and C2H5OH (ii) C2H5OH and C3H7OH

Open in App
Solution

(i) CH3OH and C2H5OH:

  1. The differences in the formulae of CH3OH and C2H5OH is -CH2.
  2. A group of organic compounds consist of particular functional groups is called as homologous series.
  3. Every successive member of the homologous series has a difference of -CH2 group from the previous one.
  4. Here, CH3OH and C2H5OH are part of Homologous series of alcohol.

(ii) C2H5OH and C3H7OH:

  1. Here also, there is a difference of -CH2group between C2H5OH and C3H7OH.
