Calculate the difference in the speeds (in metres per second)of sound in air $-3^{\circ }C$, 60 cm pressure of mercury and ${30}^{\circ }C$, 75 cm pressure of mercury. The speed of sound in air at $0^{\circ }C$ is 332 m/s.

Speed of sound in air at temperature $t^{o}C$ is given by ,

$v_t=v_0+0.61t$ ,

given $v_0=332m/s,t_1=-3^{o}C,t_2={30}^{o}C$ ,

hence , $v_{t1}=332+0.61\times (-3)=330.17m/s$ ,

and $v_{t2}=332+0.61\times 30=350.3m/s$ ,

therefore difference in speeds ,

$v_{t2}-v_{t1}=350.3-330.17=20.13m/s$
