Question

Calculate the difference in the speeds of sound in air at -30C, 60cm pressure of mercury and 300C, 75cm pressure of mercury. the speed of sound in air at 00C is 332ms-1.

Open in App
Solution

Velocity of sound is not affected by the change in pressure of air. Velocity of sound at 1∘C,

v = (332+0.61 t)m/s

The given temperatures are:
t1= (-3) degree celcius and,
t2= 30 degree celcius.

At −3∘C, v=(332−0.61×3)m/s

At 30∘C, v=(332+0.61×30)m/s

∴V(30∘C)−V(−3∘C)=(20.13) m/s
