Question

Calculate the force required to move a train of 2000 quintal up an inclined of 1 in 50 with an acceleration of 2ms^-2, the force of friction being 0.5 Newton per quintal.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Here given, m = 2000 quintals = 2000 X 100 kg
sin θ = 1/50 ; a = 2 ms-2
Force of friction = 0.5 N per quintal
F = 0.5 X 2000 = 1000 N
In moving up an inclined plane, force required against gravity = m g sin θ = 20, 0000 X 9.8 X 1/50 = 39200 N.
Also force required to produce acceleration = m a = 20, 0000 X 2 = 40,0000 N
Therefore, total force required = 1000 + 39200 + 40,0000 = 440200 N .
