Question

Calculate the magnitude of resonance energy of N2O (in kJ mol1) from the following data:
ΔH0f of N2O is 82 kJmol1
Bond energies:
NN 946 kJmol1
N=N 418 kJmol1
O=O 498 kJmol1
N=O 607 kJmol1

Open in App
Solution

Given, the heat of formation of N2O is ΔHf(exp)=82 kJmol1.
Again, N2+12O2N2O
ΔHf(cal)=B.E. of reactantsB.E of products
ΔHf(cal)=[946+12(498)(418+607)]=170 kJ/mol
Resonance energy is a stabilization energy.
So, resonance energy = ΔHf(exp)ΔHf(cal)=82170=88 kJmol1
