Question

Calculate the molar mass of the following:

(i) H2O

(ii) CO2

(iii) CH4

Open in App
Solution

(i) Molar mass of water (H2O)

Atomic mass of H=1 u
Atomic mass of O=16 u

Molar mass of water (H2O)=(2×atomic mass of H)+(1×atomic mass of O) =(2×1)+(1×16)=18g/mol

(ii) Molar mass of carbon dioxide (CO2)

Atomic mass of C=12 u
Atomic mass of O=16 u

Molar mass of (CO2)=(1×atomic mass of C)+(2×atomic mass of O) =(1×12)+(2×16)=44g/mol

(iii) Molar mass of methane (CH4)

Atomic mass of C=12 u
Atomic mass of H=1 u

Molar mass of methane (CH4)=(1×atomic mass of C)+(4×atomic mass of H) =(1×12)+(4×1)=16 g/mol
