Question

Calculate the molarity and molality of 20 percent aqueous ethanol solution by volume . Assume the solution to be ideal.( Density of solution =0.960 g per cm3)

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Consider 100 ml solution.
It has 20 ml alcohol and 80 ml water.
total mass = 96 g
mass of alcohol = 16 g
moles = 16 / 46 = 0.348
Molarity = 0.348 x 1000 / 100
= 3.48 M
Molality = 0.348 x 1000 / 80
=4.348 m
here we took 80 coz mass of solvent is 80 g.
