Question

Calculate the mole fraction and normality of solution if 10 gm 10 gm of H2SO4 is dissolved in 50 gm of water??

Open in App
Solution

Dear student
number of moles =mass/molar mass
nH2O = 50gm / 18gm/mol = 2.78 moles
nH2SO4 = 10gm / 98gm/mol = 0.102 moles
mole fraction of H2SO4 = moles of H2SO4 /total moles
= 0.102 / (0.102+2.78)
= 0.0354
Normality = number of gram equivalent of solute / volume of solution in litre
equivalent weight of H2SO4 = molar mass / valence = 98/2 =49gm
Gram equivalent weight of H2SO4 = given mass / equivalent weight = 10gm/49gm = 0.204 gm
volume of solution in litre = mass/ density = 50gm/1gm/mL = 50mL = 0.05L
THUS normality(N) = 0.204gm/0.05L
= 4.1N
