Question

Calculate the molecular masses of the following compounds:

(a) Methanol, CH3OH

(b) Ethanol, C2H5OH

Open in App
Solution

(a) The atomic number of carbon is 6 and atomic mass is 12u. The atomic number of hydrogen is 1 and atomic mass is 1u. The atomic number of oxygen is 8 and atomic mass is 16u.

CH3OH

12 + 1 (3) + 16 + 1.

12 + 3 + 16 + 1.

15 + 17.

32u.

(b)

Formula of ethanol is C2H5OH

2(C) = 2(12) = 24

5(H) = 5(1) = 5

1(O) =1(16) = 16

1(H) =1(1)= 1

Add these , will get 46g/mol
