Calculate the volume of oxygen at STP required for the complete combustion of 100 litres of carbon monoxide at the same temperature and pressure.
2CO+O2⟶2CO2
(b) 200cm3 of hydrogen and 150 cm of oxygen are mixed and ignited, as per the following reaction,
2H2+O2⟶2H2O. What volume of oxygen remains unreacted?
(a)The reaction is:-
2CO2 Vol+O21 Vols⟶2CO22 Vols
[ By Gay Lussac's Law]
2 vol of CO2 is completely combusted by 1 vol of O2
100l of CO2 is completely combusted by 12×100 l of O2
100l of CO2 is completely combusted by 50l of O2
Therefore required O2=50l
(b) 2H2+O2⟶2H2O
2 vol. of hydrogen requires 1 vol. of oxygen for combustion.
So, 1 vol. of hydrogen will require 12 vol. of oxygen for combustion.
Thus, 200 cm3. of hydrogen will require 12×200=100 cm3 of oxygen.
So, vol. of oxygen unreacted =(150−100) cm3=50 cm3
