Question

Calculate which of the following calcium nitrate or ammonium sulfate has a higher % of nitrogen.
[Ca=40, O=16, S=32, N=14]

Open in App
Solution

As we know that,
percentage by weight=weighttotal weight×100
Therefore,
(a)percentage by weight of N in calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2)-
Molecular weight of nitrogen =14g
Weight of nitrogen in Ca(NO3)2=2×14g=28g
Weight of Ca(NO3)2=164g
percentage by weight =28164×100=17.073%
(b)percentage by weight of N in ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4)-
Weight of nitrogen =14g
Weight of nitrogen in ((NH4)2SO4)=2×14=28g
Weight of ((NH4)2SO4)=132g
percentage by weight =28132×100=21.21%
Hence the percentage of nitrogen in ammonium sulphate is higher than that in calcium nitrate.
