Food chain

  1. A linear network of links in a food web starting from the producers (plants) and ending at an apex predator species, detritivores, or decomposer species is known as a food chain.
  2. It shows how the organisms are related to each other by the food they eat.
  3. Plants are the main organisms in a food chain.
  4. They are autotrophs and can capture the sunlight to build energy and convert carbon dioxide to carbohydrates.
  5. The consumers present above the upper trophic levels consume the energy, fixed in the process of photosynthesis process by the plants.
  6. Thus, autotrophs or plants take the first position in all the food chains and a food chain cannot exist without producers or plants.
