Question

Can the intermixing of two solids be termed diffusion? Comment.

Open in App
Solution

→ Due to small interparticle spaces and strong forces of attraction the particles of a solid only vibrate around their mean positions and thus, can not move from their positions.

→ They do not show the property of diffusion into other solids furthermore, spontaneous intermixing of particles of one solid into another solid does not produce a homogeneous mixture therefore, the intermixing of two solids cannot be termed diffusion.
