Question

Can we clone extinct dinosaurs from DNA preserved in their fossils?

Open in App
Solution

Yes we can, but not yet.

Cloning is not easy. Cloning only requires a single gene.
This gene, or, DNA must be preserved in an environment, where it is perfectly safe.

The gene must be given essential nutrients, so that it can form a cell. This cell, then needs to multiply and multiply and finally form an organism.

The main problem here is that DNA takes a very long time to actually become a cell. So, cost and time is very high.
Dinosaurs are large, with billions of cells. All these cells must be formed from a single cell. This requires a lot of research and costly equipments.

Now, currently, we are successful in cloning bacteria and viruses. They are small, single celled, grows rapidly.

So, until we can create such equipments, we cannot clone dinosaurs. But it is surely possible theoretically.
