Question

Can we use a copper vessel to store MAgNO3 solution? Given E–Ag+/Ag = 0.80V.

Solution

Dear Student,

If we store AgNO3 solution in a copper vessel the copper will be oxidized and forms Cu(NO3)2 and silver gets reduced to silver metal and hence the copper vessel gets corroded.

2AgNO3(aq) + Cu(s) Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s)

This happens because copper is more reactive than silver and hence oxidises itself and reduces Ag+ ions to Ag. [Eo Cu2+/Cu = +0.34 V].
