Question

Can we use the word axon instead of neuron.?

Open in App
Solution

No you cannot use the word axon instead of neuron. The reason is that both have different functions and more over axon is a part of neuron and not an independent cell.

An axon, or nerve fiber, is a long slender projection of a nerve cell, or neuron, that conducts electrical impulses away from the neuron's cell body or soma. Axons are in effect the primary transmission lines of the nervous system, and as bundles they help make up nerves.

A neuron is a cell that carries electrical impulses. Neurons are the basic units of the nervous system and its most important part is the brain. Every neuron is made of a cell body (also called a soma), dendrites and an axon. Dendrites and axons are nerve fibres.

But you can call a neuron as neurone
(British spelling) or a nerve cell.
