Question

Carbon disulphide, CS2, can be made from by-product SO2. The overall reaction is 5C+2SO2CS2+4CO
How much CS2 in kg can be produced from 440 kg of waste SO2 with 60 kg of coke if the SO2 conversion is 80%

Open in App
Solution

Purity of SO2 = 80 %
Mass of pure SO2 = 440×0.8=352 kg
5C+2SO2CS2+4CO
Moles of SO2=352×103 g64 g/mol=5.5×103 mol
Moles of C=60×103 g12 g/mol=5×103 mol

moles of SO2stoichiometric coefficient=5.5×1032
moles of Cstoichiometric coefficient=5×1035

Hence C is the limiting reagent.
1 Mole of carbon disulphide formed from 5 moles of C.
Hence moles of carbon disulphide formed from 5×103 = 15×5×103=1000 mol
mass of CS2 =1000×76 g=76 kg
