These harmful compounds are: hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas and hydrocarbons causes smog. Before leaving the exhaust system of the car, these are converted to less harmful compounds. Carbon monoxide(CO) is converted to carbon dioxide(CO2).
