Question

Cells are also made up of atom?

Open in App
Solution

Living cells have different molecules than non-living things. And these different molecules perform chemical reactions that characterize living things.

The definition of life is something that has all 4 of the following characteristics:
1. Metabolism (anabolism and catabolism)
2. Response to stimuli
3. Growth
4. Reproduction

Those activities separate living from non-living.

ALL of them depend on chemical reactions. The molecules of cells are indeed made up of atoms, but the identity and chemistry of those molecules allow and mandate those 4 characteristics.
